I just did the updates and now Vista will not boot not even in safe mode , so booted from DVD and did repair and it failed .
code:
Root cause  found  A patch is preventing the system from starting 

WTF any one else and ideas ?

edit : there was one patch that had a name like ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver
I don't have any thing that is ATI in this system , is there a way to remove the drivers by editing the INf files

Ya that is how i found out Root cause found A patch is preventing the system from starting and all it has for that is

An update to the operating system was installed prior to the startup failure.

After a reinstall I see that MS has removed the ATI patch the got installed. Auto update /install is now d/l only and i pick what installs
