This is starting to annoy the hell out of me. For no apparant reason we keep losing connection to the interent. We are all able to play Q3 on the network without any problem. It is just internet connection that goes down network wide.

I am on cable so our set up was cable modem to router to server and then out to 6 boxes.

It got to such a state 3 weeks ago that I actually had to phone up NTL hell (my cable provider who charges per minute for tech support) they said it was my linksys router so I upgraded and bought a netgear 1GB 4 way switch at the same time taking the opportunity to upgrade the server card to 1GB.

File transfer is now shit hot but the internet connections still drop!

There is no specific time it goes down. Can be variable to 2 or 3 times in a 20 minute period to no problems for a couple of hours. I have looked at the event logs on the server and 2 of the local boxes but cannot find anything in the logs which would indicate a problem.

The server is on Server 2000 3 of the boxes are WinXP Pro and 3 are win2000.

IP's are currently assigend by the router (via DHCP?) Could it be that server and the router are competing agaisnt each other?

Should I specify the IP address and specify the default gateway on each box rather than let the router assign and windows work it out for itself?

Any pertinent non barbie [icon908] advice appeciated [skull24]

wooo - slow down there.

I am on cable so our set up was cable modem to router to server and then out to 6 boxes.

what does this actually mean?
i'm guessing it isnt what you wrote:
i.e. router into nic1 of server
server nic2 to switch & 6 clients.

but

router to switch
switch connected to LAN machines (server &6 clients)

dhcp is activated from where?
server? is DNS server also activated with FLZ pointing to the router?
router?

the logfile from the router would be helpfull,
should be a list of eventfull things like
dropped packets
firewall intrusions peer resets
ip leases
princess wetting the bed
and such events.

okay yeah wasn't what I meant

it was modem to router to no1 port on 16 port switch. The server and other boxes in other ports.

Since upgrading the router which is 4 port I have one cable going from router to 16 port switch and 2 cables one going to server and one to my box as they are the only 1gb enabled clients.

The problem with dropping is the same in the old set up and the new. interestingly I just lost internet connection to Explorer and Firefox but the cricket commentary kept on playing even though I could not access the internet. (streaming?)

No logs from the modem - will go looking

DHCP I think is activated from the Router - but could this be conflict?
DNS there is events on the server but they do not correspond to the times access is lost. The error entries for DNS happen every 2 houtrs.

Well it didn't work!

It suggested that the Router if on auto sensing might think the modem was capable of full duplex which it apparantly is not. I set the WAN port to half duplex and still dropping the internet connection.

it might not be your router, but your isp.

thats why i suggested trying tools to evaluate your connection - see if your loop attenuation is too high for your profile or whatnot..

I have now conencted the cable modem direct to my PC.

Seems to work okay. I am praying it will now drop so I can blame the cable modem and get virgin misery to replace it.
